ValLimar Jansen and Tom Kendzia brought the Scriptures alive with song, acting and interaction with the faithful of Assumption at the Advent Concert Friday evening, Dec. 16th. The photos are unable fully to capture the sounds, music, volume, movement, and laughter. One parishioner asked me, "Fr. Tom, when can they come back, I want my entire family to see and hear this?" Another remarked, "Father, 90 minutes of song and the acting out of three Gospel stories seemed like it was over in just 15 minutes!"
ValLimar has sung for Pope Benedict and 300,000 gathered with him in St. Peter's, Rome. As a priest, I will now appreciate the: "Woman at the Well," "On the Road to Emmaus" and "Elizabeth, Mother of John the Baptist," so differently! Actually, I could not wait to get back to my room to re read these Gospel passages she brought to life, with humor, reverence, emotion and song! I ministered with Tom Kendzia at St. Mary in Ridgefield some 33 years ago. He remarked to me, "Father, we never expected to bring New England Catholics to their feet, hands clapping, bodies in motion and participating with such ease! They are not part of the "frozen chosen" one often finds in the Catholic Northeast."
Tom paid our Organist and Parish Director of Music a great compliment. He remarked, "Usually when we travel around the United States and Europe, the Parish Musicians never show up as they are threatened by us. I can't believe our own Frank Matto not only attended but actively participated!" Tom Kendzia tried to give me credit for the spirit in the congregation but I had to deflect the affirmation to inform him, "Tom these wonderful people were long set on fire with charity and freedom long before I arrived...truth be told, they have liberated me!"
Thank you to Cathy Romano for inviting Tom and ValLimar to Assumption and making all the arrangements for them to come to our parish during Advent to help us prepare for the Birth of Christ in a spiritual manner, in Church, prayerful and most
entertaining. Thank you to all who were able to be with us. And if you are wondering: No one who attended asked me to detail their car for free because they were uninspired...
actually some were so inspired, in gratitude, they offered to detail my CRV! :) Father Tom
